(previously entitled According to Doyle). This little book, written by Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson, one of the best poker players of the Doyle Brunson: Poker Wisdom of a Championworld, and a wise and warm person as well, is a little pearl. It doesn't teach you much about winning poker, but it contains a lot of good advice and a number of really interesting anecdotes about poker and poker players.

This is a book for players who like the game and who like to read about the game. It is witty, insightful, cute, and interesting. A sort of "bed time poker stories"! Go buy!

Doyle Brunson's Super System: A Course in Power Poker 1 & 2 (1979).

When this book was first published it caused a sensation. Immediately Doyle Brunson: Super Systemrecognized as the most ambitious poker book ever written, it nonetheless was received with irritation by some professionals because it was believed that Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson and his collaborators gave away too much, thereby allowing the amateurs to catch up, thus cutting into the professional player's take.

Doyle Brunson: Super System 2 There is some truth to this accusation. Poker is an evolving game. Write a revealing book and the old games disappear more quickly and the "rocks" have to learn the new game in order to continue to make a living.

What makes Brunson's Super/System more interesting than many other other poker books, is partly the prestige and celebrity of the writers, especially Doyle himself, but also Bobby Baldwin, David "Chip" Reese, Joey Hawthorne, David Sklanski; and Mike Caro (MJC). Sklanski, for instance, is one of the game's great theoreticians and the author of several excellent books on poker. Caro, known as "the Mad Genius of Poker," has formed his own "Poker University", and has become quite a poker entrepreneur.

Second, there is the comprehensive coverage of the games from five card draw to no limit hold'em. Not everything is explained and some of the tricks are held back.

This is a poker classic, and a must read for students of the game. A lot of intriguing ideas and notions, and interesting commentary as well. Also, it is very well written!

Dan Harrington & Bill Robertie: Harrington on Hold 'em Expert Strategy for No Limit Tournaments, 1 & 2.

Dan Harrington: Hold'Em StrategyThese are probably the best books ever written on tournaments and tournament strategy. Harrington & Robertie's books discuss how the game changes during the different phases of a tournament, and how to value chips and to play in these different phases. It also discusses the role of position, style, and a number of other issues highly important to players wanting to play poker tournaments.

Harrington's books are intended for No-Limit Hold'Em tournament play. However, they also offer a variety of ideas and techniques that are useful in other forms of Texas Hold `Em. Harrington is selective in the hands that he chooses to play; his choices are based not only on his hole cards but also his position and his chip stack relativeDan Harrington: Hold'em Tournament Strategy to the blinds and the other players. Once he chooses to play a hand, he bets in a moderately aggressive manner so as to present his opponents with pot odds that are unfavorable to them. A central feature of his tactics is always knowing how much money is in the pot, and projecting what size bet you need to make to set your opponents' pot odds at the desired level. There is an extensive requirement to know the odds related to various events - e.g., filling a flush draw, beating a pair with two higher cards, etc. Harrington assumes you have these odds at your finger tips and can use them in real time and under pressure.

These are books that definitely have a place in the core poker library of any poker player!

Winning Low-Limit Hold'em, by Lee Jones

This is a book on solid, winning low limit hold'em, not middle or high-limit. Many Sklansky worshipers are probably offended that anyoneWinning Low Limit Hold'em, by Lee Jones would dare attempt a competing book on the subject of Texas Hold'em, but even Lee Jones says in this book that "Sklansky & Malmuth have written the definitive text on medium limit hold'em." But that is not what this book is about.

Winning Low Limit Hold'em will help you understand more advanced books when you are ready for them. It does not contain some of the more advanced poker strategy and theory because that does not work in typical loose/passive low-limit games, period. And if you try those advances strategies at this level, it may end up costing you and not your opponent. Naturally, as you would with any book, you will have to tweak certain recomendations and tactics to fit the specific game you are playing in, but if you don't have the flexibility to do that and find yourself playing like a robot, any book you read will be of little, if any, benefit to you. Highly recommended!
